ND = not detected. — = not reported in the utility's report. Bold amber = above the federal limit or action level as reported (most limits apply to running annual averages). Hover a value for what the number represents.
How to read this
Hardness is a nuisance measure, not a health one. Under 60 mg/L is soft by USGS classes. Every utility here that reports hardness is soft, which is why we don't sell softeners to city-water homes without a test.
TTHM and HAA5 are byproducts of disinfecting water. Utilities report a running annual average against federal limits of 80 and 60 ppb.
Lead usually comes from a home's own plumbing, so utilities sample at customer taps and report the 90th percentile. An individual older home can differ, which is what a certified-lab tap test is for.
PFOA and PFOS: EPA's enforceable limits for PFOA and PFOS are 4.0 parts per trillion. In May 2026 EPA proposed rescinding the limits for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX) and the mixture Hazard Index, and extending PFOA/PFOS compliance to 2031. As of September 2026 those proposals are not final. EPA.
Methodology: we downloaded each utility's 2025-data Consumer Confidence Report from its official website and recorded values exactly as printed, with page references, in our public data files. Where a printed unit appears to be a typo, we hold the number until the utility confirms it. To see what this means for a specific town, start from our service area pages.
Questions about this report
Where do these numbers come from?
Each utility's own Consumer Confidence Report (annual water quality report) for the 2025 data year, published in 2026. We read every value from the utility's document and link to it. We don't use third-party aggregator sites for numbers.
What does 'pending' mean?
A few reports print PFAS results with a unit that can't be right (for example, micrograms where the values only make sense as nanograms). We don't publish those numbers until the utility confirms the unit.
Does a number above a limit mean my water is unsafe?
Not by itself. Most limits apply to a running annual average, and a utility that exceeds one must notify customers and take corrective action. Read your utility's report for its explanation, and test at your own tap if you have a specific concern.
Is Charlotte's water hard?
No. Charlotte Water reported hardness of 32 mg/L in its 2025 report, which is soft by USGS standards. Most reservoir-fed systems in the region that report hardness are soft too.
